Folder Organization
Learn how to organize your Focusly outputs using subject-based and custom folders.
What Are Folders?
Folders in Focusly help you organize your learning outputs (summaries, questions, flashcards, etc.) into logical groups. Think of them as virtual filing cabinets for your study materials.
Benefits of Good Organization
- ✅ Find content faster: Locate specific outputs quickly
- ✅ Stay organized: Keep related materials together
- ✅ Track progress: See what you've created for each subject
- ✅ Study efficiently: Access subject-specific materials easily
- ✅ Reduce clutter: Keep workspace tidy and manageable
Folder Types
Subject Folders (Automatic)
What they are:
- Created automatically when you select a subject in any module
- Named after the subject (e.g., "Mathematics", "English", "Science")
- Organize outputs by academic subject
How they work:
- You select a subject when creating an output
- Focusly automatically creates a folder for that subject (if it doesn't exist)
- Your output is saved to that subject folder
- All future outputs for that subject go to the same folder
Example:
- Create a summary for "Biology" → Saved to "Biology" folder
- Generate questions for "Biology" → Also saved to "Biology" folder
- Create flashcards for "Chemistry" → Saved to new "Chemistry" folder
Custom Folders
What they are:
- Folders you create manually for specific purposes
- Can be named anything you want
- Great for projects, topics, or time periods
Use cases:
- Exam preparation: "Final Exam 2024"
- Projects: "Research Project - Climate Change"
- Topics: "WWI Study Materials"
- Time periods: "Week 1-5 Notes"
- Mixed subjects: "Essay Writing Resources"
How to create:
- Go to the Saved Outputs sidebar
- Click Create New Folder or + button
- Enter folder name
- Choose folder type (Custom)
- Click Create
Default Folder
What it is:
- A catch-all folder for outputs without a specified subject
- Used when you select "Other" or don't specify a subject
- Named "Unsorted" or "Default"
When it's used:
- You choose "Other" as the subject
- You don't select any subject
- Temporary storage before organizing
Tip: Regularly review and move items from the default folder to appropriate subject or custom folders.
How Outputs Are Organized
Automatic Organization
When you create an output using any module:
- You select a subject (e.g., "Mathematics")
- Output is generated (summary, questions, flashcards, etc.)
- Automatically saved to the corresponding folder
- Appears in sidebar under that folder
No manual saving needed!
Manual Organization
You can also manually organize outputs:
- Move between folders: Drag outputs or use move option
- Create custom folders: For special purposes
- Rename folders: Update folder names as needed
- Delete folders: Remove folders you no longer need
